RXLICS // MOURNER'S Shoppin' for a Coffin | Classic Horror T-Shirt
from £22.00
Some things are recovered because they matter. Others survive because nobody had the good sense to destroy them.
Founded in 1992, Mourner & Sons Funerary Goods served a small community with coffins, burial arrangements and what surviving advertisements repeatedly describe as “a friendly approach to your final purchase.”
Business was apparently slow.
So, in an attempt to make death feel a little more approachable, Mr Mourner (Father of J J Mourner) volunteered to model the company's newest range himself. He climbed into twelve coffins over the course of a single afternoon, posed beside another six, and reportedly insisted that smiling would make the photographs “less depressing.”
Unfortunately, the campaign launched three days after Mr Mourner died.
His sons ran it anyway.
SHOPPIN' FOR A COFFIN! appeared in windows throughout the district featuring their recently deceased father enthusiastically displaying the very coffin in which he was subsequently buried.
Sales increased by 34%.
Mourner & Sons considered the campaign a tremendous success.
The family of Mr Mourner considered it “what he would have wanted.”
Everyone else considered it deeply upsetting.
RXLICS recovered the advertisement anyway.
This piece recreates one of the surviving Mourner & Sons promotional designs, complete with the original 1992 branding and RXLICS archive mark on the sleeve.
Because not every RXLIC tells the story of a fallen civilisation, an impossible creature or a fractured Realm.
Sometimes it's just evidence that somebody was very, very bad at advertising their business.
