THE VEILS
REALITY DOES NOT BECOME STRANGER. YOU SIMPLY BEGIN TO SEE MORE OF IT.
VEIL ONE // HABIT
The world as most beings understand it.
Matter behaves as matter. Roads lead where they appear to lead. Death follows life. Cause precedes consequence. The impossible is dismissed because reality has trained its inhabitants not to look for it, and superstition spreads to account for anything larger.
Habit is not false reality.
It is reality viewed from the safest distance.
Most lives never pass beyond it.
VEIL TWO // INTERFACE
The point at which the hidden structures of reality become accessible.
Symbols. Ritual. Language. Masks. Crystals. Machines. Gesture.
Different realms discover different methods, and inevitably give them different names: magic, technology, divinity, craft.
The distinction matters less than they believe.
Each is an interface.
A means of asking reality to behave in a way the First Veil says it should not.
Most who believe they have discovered the hidden world have merely reached its interface.
VEIL THREE // STRUCTURE
Beyond the interface lies the thing being interfaced with.
Here, the convenient divisions of the First Veil begin to fail.
Worlds are no longer entirely separate places. Distance is not always geographical. Identity does not necessarily end at the body. Cause and consequence may cease to occur in the order expected of them.
Patterns emerge beneath apparently unrelated realities.
Things previously understood as magic begin to resemble mechanisms.
Things worshipped as gods begin to resemble occupants.
And occasionally, something glimpses the architecture upon which its world has been built.
Few observers reach the Third Veil deliberately.
Fewer return understanding what they saw.
Some return having been noticed.
BEYOND THE THIRD
Here the doctrine fractures. Some records describe further Veils.
Others insist that numbering anything beyond the Third is a mistake made by minds attempting to impose order upon something that possesses none.
Accounts contradict. Distances cease to agree.
Observers describe principles wearing bodies. Places existing without worlds. Events remembered before they occurred. Entire realities appearing less like creation and more like consequence.
There are references to deeper thresholds.
None use the same names. None agree upon their number.
And one recurring warning survives across several otherwise unrelated records:
Do not assume that because you can see deeper into reality, reality cannot see deeper into you.
